A Chinese News crew accompanied the 2015 Road to Shu tour and has made a video mostly in Chinese about our tour. It has recently been shown on youtube, with the result that my March 2017 tour is full and there are people on the waiting list. So I am offering a second tour from April 1 to April 20 if anyone is interested in signing up. For more information on the tour visit www.chinasgreatroads.com. A notice of Susan Elizabeth Davis's pro-choice novel, Love Means Second Chances, appears on page 32 in the Summer Alumnae Quarterly and refers readers to a blurb at alumnae.mtholyoke.edu/moreooks_su12.
Since many alumnae may not take the time to go there, Sue has provided the cover and back cover copy. For more about the book -- why and how she wrote it -- please visit her website and blog: www.lovemeanssecondchances.com. If you have ideas about how to help her publicize her book, she can be contacted at sednyc@rcn.com, 212-989-6756.
Love Means Second Chances
What could tear apart three generations of women in a Catholic family in 1991 Brooklyn, New York?
Abortion.
After becoming pregnant unexpectedly, Christy, a Juilliard student with plans to become an opera singer, decides to keep her abortion a secret. She knows her mother, Carole, would be totally opposed -- if she ever found out. Carole never considered abortion when she became pregnant with Christy in 1972, even though it was then legal in New York State. Instead, Carole married and gave up her dream of becoming a nurse. Fortunately, her mother-in-law, Mary Louise, took Carole in after her father disowned her for getting pregnant out of wedlock. Mary Louise, whose primary desire is to support whatever the woman wants, acts as a bridge between Christy and Carole as they struggle to find common ground.
Love Means Second Chances provocatively explores themes of love and loss, yearning and abandonment, forgiveness and acceptance as mothers and daughters emerge from this crisis to find new beginnings.
"Three generations of strong, believable women cope with the real meanings of choice. A welcome feminist voice/vision."
~ Martha Roth, author Arousal: Bodies & Pleasures
"This intense -- often riveting -- family drama is full of rich encounters. Bold and humane, this page-turner doesn't shy away from politically sensitive themes."
~ Eleanor J. Bader, co-author Targets of Hatred: Anti-Abortion Terrorism and columnist RHRealityCheck.org.
"Susan Elizabeth Davis has created vulnerable, strong and sympathetic women whose struggle over the meaning of a woman's choice is interwoven with family love and fierce yearnings of the heart."
~ Emily Hanlon, novelist Petersburg and writing coach
Susan Elizabeth Davis has written hundreds of nonfiction articles and four nonfiction books, two of which were about reproductive rights. This is her first novel.

I have known about the organization TED (Technology..Entertainment...Design) for several years, but only yesterday found out they were meeting in Long Beach (local city) and that anyone can listen to their talks, join the Community for free, and see past talks. The speakers are the thinkers of the world - Bill Gates was yesterday, Dean Kamen - the inventor of the Segway, Jane Goodall, Al Gore....the list goes on. There was an interview on NPR yesterday with a man who says we can have inexpensive electric cars combined with a localized energy source - could be solar, could be wind, depending on the location.
For those who sign up (free), they can post their profile - we could have a MHC group.
The website is - www.ted.com
